Patreon
Thank you for considering supporting our Patreon. We provide independent coverage of the San Jose Earthquakes and relevant coverage of its affiliate teams and its academy teams.
We currently have three media members with media- and game-level credentials on our staff, and our contributors have a combined 43 years of experience covering the Earthquakes. See this post for our 2021 season coverage team.
Why do you have a Patreon?
- It allows us to subscribe to digital services that improve our website and patron offerings and purchase equipment that improves our content.
- It allows us to save up money for travel expenses for some away match and playoffs coverage (which the Quakes have had very little of in the past).
- It allows us to save up money to pay contributors in the future and expand our services to our patrons.
What do you use the Patreon money on?
- One example of services that we use is Wyscout (~$300/yr), a platform typically used by clubs to scout players and opposition. The platform gives us access to clips of players from all around the world, and it allows us to enhance our analysis and our articles.
- Some other costs include website hosting, video storage for our Patreon clips, streaming service to run our live show, and more.
- While our regular contributors are currently unpaid, we make exceptions for occasional content from contributors who are normally paid for their work.
- We have traveled to an Earthquakes preseason game at Coachella in Indio, CA, and produced a minimum of five in-person interviews with Quakes staff and players
- A sizable portion of our funds allow for travel to away games on the West Coast, plus travel to San Jose for our remote hosts for bigger events.
- Quality lighting, sound, and video equipment for The Aftershock. In 2023, we purchased a sound board and wireless lapel mics for pitchside and on-pitch postgame shows.
What do you have planned for the future?
- We are constantly talking to our patrons about offerings that would improve their experience. For example, the idea of a private Slack for our patrons came from a current patron. Now we use the Slack to get more ideas from our patrons.
- We are working on creating some San Jose Earthquakes merchandise that patrons will get to access before the general public.
- We want to give opportunities to students and young adults that are interested in a career in sports.
What does your Patreon currently offer?
Early Access
For $2/month or more subscriptions, patrons get early access to all of our written articles, interviews, etc. published on the website.
Zoom Calls
This offseason we began hosting Zoom calls for all our patrons to ask questions about our Patreon services and provide some additional insight about the Earthquakes in an open discussion format. It’s also a great way to meet other fans that you connect with on social media.
We are considering an in-person format once or twice a season when it is safe to do so.
Patron Slack
We have a private, exclusive Slack with all of our contributors and patrons for $5/month or more subscriptions. We share a lot of content here that doesn’t make it to the public, and it is generally a fun place to chat about soccer. We have multiple channels for various interests. Our gameday Slack channels is a great way to enjoy a live game with other fans of the Earthquakes or the US Soccer men’s and women’s teams.
Special Player Clips
We post videos similar to this one where we have edited together all of Cade Cowell’s touches in the 2021 Quakes 3-1 win against FC Dallas for $5/month or more subscriptions.
Tactical Analysis Segments
We make exclusive analysis video segments for $5/month or more subscriptions. In order to demonstrate our Patreon’s value to prospective patrons, some video content may be provided as a timed exclusive.
Raw Press Conference Video/Audio
We upload raw midweek press conference video/audio for $5/month or more subscriptions. Due to the current remote nature of press conferences, this previously-exclusive service may be duplicated elsewhere by other media.
Previously we offered postgame press conference video/audio to patrons, but this is now available to everyone at no charge through our live show on YouTube, The Aftershock. If you enjoy The Aftershock, consider becoming a patron to help us cover the costs associated to show production.
