SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose Earthquakes coach Matias Almeyda expressed his side attempted to buy Isaac Brizuela from Liga MX giant Chivas this past winter.
Brizuela, 28, who is a native of San Jose, recently told Quakes Epicenter “let’s see” regarding a possible reunion with his former coach.
According to Almeyda, however, the chances of the Mexico national team winger joining the Black-and-Blue anytime soon are slim to none.
“I like reuniting with them (Chivas players) because I have great memories [with them],” Almeyda told a gaggle of reporters at Avaya Stadium midweek. “I esteem them a lot as people. I know that Isaac (Brizuela) has a lot of family here.”
“At one point, we made an attempt [to sign him], but the price Chivas was asking for him was unattainable for San Jose,” he added. “[Brizuela] was in our plans but not the economic part of them.”
San Jose are expected to be busy during the summer transfer window, however.
Just recently, Quakes striker Danny Hoesen acquired his permanent residency, opening an international slot for the Bay Area side, which Almeyda hopes will be utilized.
“Yes, we need to analyze it with the leadership,” Almeyda said about the vacant international slot heading into the summer transfer window. “It would be good to reinforce that open slot with a player that can make a difference.”
It was also recently reported that Almeyda’s side will look to open an additional international slot ahead of what will be a second opportunity for general manager Jesse Fioranelli and ‘El Pelado’ to bolster their team, who have struggled early on and take on one of the league’s best in LAFC on Saturday.
