Team — 5.8
A difficult match for the Quakes, in which they played quite well at home against a David Villa-less NYCFC side but still came up short. The blame for NYCFC’s goals is not easy to pin on any Quakes players, and a different defection or fewer heroics from NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson could have given a better result for San Jose.
Tarbell — 5.5
Very little to do overall, and could do nothing about either goal: a blast off the underside of the crossbar and a bad deflection.
Lima — 6.4
Pushed forward and combined very well with Eriksson, along with putting in some dangerous crosses himself. Solid defensively with the exception of one play that saw him get twisted and beaten in the penalty area.
Cummings — 4.5
Very poor outing, with multiple mind-boggling giveaways. Taken off early after 75 minutes played.
Quintana — 5.3
Got a goal in the third minute, and this seemed to give him confidence that lasted about 10 minutes. After that, he was no better than his central back partner, being too easily beaten and less-than-sure on his command in the back.
Salinas — 5.3
Despite being beaten in the buildup to NYCFC’s second goal, it was the deflection that made the goal, and he played relatively well overall. He limited his mistakes in the back, and made mostly good decisions in the attacking third. However, he was rather poor in extra time as the Quakes chased an equalizer.
Eriksson — 6.5
Lots of fire and movement as he — along with Hoesen and Vako — seemed the most likely to make something happen. Also impressive defensively with his tracking back.
Jungwirth — 6.5, POTM
Very, very disruptive throughout, and really limited what the NYCFC midfield could do. He also kept possession well and limited reckless defensive lunges.
Godoy — 6.0
Great in possession, okay defensively. Picked up a yellow for a bad challenge that could have been red on another day.
Vako — 6.2
Seemed full of confidence from his wonder goal while away on international duty, this sometimes led him to dwell a bit too much on the ball. That said, his score-first attitude around the penalty area was what was needed, even if nothing came off.
Hoesen — 6.2
Did what he could with the hold-up play, and really tried to keep the Quakes going in the attack. He was also caught offside 3 times, including on what could have been the equalizer.
Wondolowski — 5.2
Poor, with three good chances that weren’t even put on target: a great cross from Eriksson, a free header on a corner, and a rebound off a shot from Vako that was sent well away from goal.
