A thunderous drive from Nick Lima was all it took, as the Quakes kept a clean sheet to beat the Colorado Rapids. Playing in the same formation as last week when they were thumped 3-0 by Seattle, a few subtle tweaks — along with playing at home — allowed the Quakes to take the three points.

The first change was a rearrangement of the back 3 in the 3-5-2 formation. Victor Bernardez was stationed in the middle, keeping him from being exposed on the wing. The next was to keep the wing backs — Nick Lima and Shea Salinas — back when out of possession, which generally kept the Quakes from being exposed and having the back line stretched. The Rapids did have some opportunities, and there is still work to be done to adjust. But the improvements were certainly there.

Bingham — 5.5

Did not play poorly, but he is still struggling with balls in the air. A corner in the first half led to a ball straight up in the air in the six-yard box, and he was only able to punch awkwardly with one hand.

Jungwirth — 5.5

Stationed on the right of the back three, he was not as exposed as he was last week. He defended well, but his long passing was wayward.

Bernardez — 5.4

Much, much more comfortable in the center of the back three. He was not asked to do much all game, but handled Gordon in the second half.

Imperiale — 5.5

The most active of the defenders, his only mistakes were poor passes out of the back. He covered his center back partners well.

Lima — 7.0, MOTM

He played a great match even without the goal. He was constantly involved in the attach, yet managed to mitigate any danger down the right flank.

Yueill — 5.5

His decision making is still slow or suspect at times, but the quality is there.

Dawkins — 5.5

Not bad in his return. He was not always involved in the attack, but he tracked back well to cover defensively.

Ceren — 5.6

He covered the back line well, and helped to build the attack from the back. Other than that, he was not as involved as Animal Godoy might have been in the same role.

Salinas — 5.7

A consistent and dangerous contributor to the attack. His set pieces were hit and miss, though.

Urena — 5.1

Okay when he could get on the ball, except for finishing. He missed an absolute sitter after rounding the keeper. He wasn’t really able to stretch the Colorado defense, which is a big reason to have him out there.

Wondolowski — 5.9

A mixed match from the captain. On the one hand, he was the one source of hold-up play to link the midfield and the attack in transition. On the other, he missed two sitters.

Thompson — 5.8

Very dangerous and energetic after coming on.

Hoesen — 5.1

Should have had an assist after getting to the end line and cutting it back to Wondo wide open on the penalty spot.
