The Quakes secured their first California Clásico win in just under two years with a 3-1 win at Stanford Stadium. After conceding the opener on a Juninho screamer, Chris Wondolowski produced a stunning finish to equalize just over 10 minutes later.  Clarence Goodson broke the deadlock off a corner shortly after halftime, and the Quakes never looked back, adding a third through Cordell Cato in the 72nd minute.1

Player Ratings

Bingham – 6 – Probably won’t be thrilled with his performance on the opening goal, but was otherwise solid. Was alert to bail out Alashe’s woeful back pass in the second half.

Wynne – 5 – Seemingly targeted by Zardes and Keane in the first half, and needed Bernardez to clean up for him on multiple occasions. Did keep Lletget quiet, however.

Goodson – 9 – Dominant in the air, smooth and confident in the defense, and took his goal well. A commanding performance.

Bernardez – 8 – A very good night for the Honduran. Perhaps called upon more than he would have liked, but never put a foot wrong in his challenges.

Stewart – 6 – Not as busy defensively as backline partners, and didn’t have many chances to go forward. Blasted yet another volley over the ball, but did finally get one on target that was deflected out for a corner.

Alashe – 6 – Anonymous in the first half, both defensively and in possession.  Has done well in recent weeks to shut down the opposing number 10, but without a Galaxy player truly in that role to focus on, he seemed more focused on Juninho and Husidic than was necessary. Much better in the second half, as he started attacks, kept possession, and helped to shut down Keane.

MPG – 8 – Started slowly, but his influence grew as the game went on. Dangerous on the ball and the playmaker for the Quakes attack, his cross to Wondo for the equalizer was spot on. Buzzed around tirelessly defensively and his set pieces were on target, including the corner into Goodson for the second goal.

Wondolowski – 8 – Seemed to have more energy as the game went on. The captain was up as a forward in the attack, and back breaking up Galaxy attacks moments later. Did well to find MPG across the field, then did billiantly to finish the return ball for the equalizer.

Nyassi – 5 – Seemed to play with more confidence after last week’s goal, but was too committed in the tackle, and deserved his early yellow. Withdrawn after 60 minutes.

Salinas – 6 – Poor before the 70th minute, with some bad crosses and a muffed one-on-one with Pinedo. Did look much better in the closing stages of the game as he combined well with Wondo and MPG, and assisted on Cato’s goal.

Jahn – 5 – A quiet performance in the return to his alma matter, and was withdrawn at the half. In his defense, the Quakes had very little midfield play in the opening 45, and he worked hard to win as many of the aimless long balls as he could.

Sherrod – 6 –  Brought on at halftime, and helped the Quakes retain possession with interplay with the midfielders. Worked hard to kill the clock after the lead was secure.

Cato – 7 – His energy seemed to help keep the Galaxy on their heels after coming on in the 60th minute. Lucky to get a shot away after two big touches in the area, but slid it neatly past the keeper for the Quakes third goal.

Thompson – NA – A late cameo to help wind down the match.
